Elephant

Elephant are the largest living land mammals. It has four thick legs, two wide hanging ears and two small black eyes. Its most obvious part is the trunk which made from upper lip. Its trunk is very soft and sensitive and it uses to grab objects such as food and water or can be a weapon to defense it self from the other animal. Elephant has a short tail behind its body. Elephant is a tame herbivore animal. It likes to eat some plants such as grass, small trees, fruit, leaves and etc. But if it becomes angry, it becomes a dangerous animal. Elephant usually does the activities at the morning until evening. Because elephant is mammals so it has baby not egg.
The body of the female elephant is bigger than the body of the male elephant. It can live for up to 70 years. It runs about 40-60 km per second. It consumes 495 pounds of food everyday which spends about 16 hours to fill its need. Elephant has the biggest brain in the animal kingdom so, its very intelligent animal and makes an elephant a very useful servant to humans. It can carry heavy loads or as an attraction animal in circus. There are Indian elephant, African elephant and Asian elephant. They are very large and grey. African elephants have large fan-shaped ears and two “fingers” at the tip of its trunk. Furthermore, the Indian Elephant is described as Elephas maximus of south-central Asia. The ears of Indian elephants are significantly smaller than African elephants. Some African elephants live on the savanna while others live in the forest. Today, many people think these are different species. Scientists named the forest group Loxodonta cyclotis and the savanna group Loxodonta africanus. There, the estimated elephant population was 400,000 as recently as 1970, but by 2006 the number had dwindled to about 10,000. African elephants can eat up to 450 kilograms (992 lb) of vegetation per day. In general, Asian elephants are smaller than african elephants and have the highest body point on the head. The tip of their trunk has one finger-like process. Their back is convex or level. Indian elephants reach a shoulder height of between 2 and 3.5 m (6.6 and 11.5 ft), weigh between 2,000 and 5,000 kg (4,400 and 11,000 lb), and have 19 pairs of ribs. Their skin color is lighter than of maximus with smaller patches of depigmentation, but darker than of sumatranus. Females are usually smaller than males, and have short or no tusks.
The largest Indian elephant was 3.43 metres (11.3 ft) high at the shoulder. Elephants are classified as megaherbivore and consume up to 150 kg (330 lb) of plant matter per day. Indian elephants have smaller ears, but relatively broader skulls and larger trunks than African elephants.
Unlike their African cousins, their abdomen is proportionate with their body weight but the African elephant has a large abdomen as compared to the skulls. Elephant has 24 teeth, 12 front teeth called pre-molars and the 12 back teeth called molars. When the last molar wears out, the elephant dies because it cannot chewing. But in a zoo or circus, people can keep elephants alive bye feeding them soft food.

Snake

Snakes are reptiles (cold-blooded creatures). They belong to the same group as lizards (the scaled group, Squamata) but form a sub-group of their own (Serpentes).
Snakes have no legs but a long time ago they had claws to help them slither along.
Snakes are not slimy. They are covered in scales which are just bumps on the skin. Their skin is hard and glossy to reduce friction as the snake slithers along the ground.
Snakes often sun bake on rocks in the warm weather. This is because snakes are cold-blooded and they need the sun’s warmth to heat their body up.
Most snakes live in the country. Some types of snakes live in trees; some live in water, but most live on the ground in deserted rabbit burrows, in thick, long grass and in old logs.
A snake’s diet usually consists of frogs, lizards, and mice and other snakes. The Anaconda can eat small crocodiles and even wild boars.
Many snakes protect themselves with their fangs. Boa Constrictors can give you a bear hug which is so powerful. It can crush every single bone in your body. Some snakes are protected by scaring their enemies away like the Cobra. The Flying Snakes glides away from danger. Their ribs spread apart and the skin stretches out. Its technique is just like the sugar glider’s.

Nasi Bakar

Things you need:
  • 1 litre of rice (wash until clean)
  • 1/4 litre of water
For the rice :
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 3 shallots
  • 125 gr coconut milk
  • 3 pieces of bay leaves
  • 1 stalk of lemongrass (cut it into 5 big pieces)
For the salted fish:
  • 5 pieces of  shallots (cut it into thin slices)
  • 200 gr anchovies
  • 2 stalk of green onion (cut into small pieces)
  • 1 red chilli
  • 1 green chilli
  • 4 thai chilli
  • 4 tbsp of vegetable oil
Banana leaves
Things you need to do:
Cook the rice. Using sauce pan stir fry the shallots until fragrant. Put in the rice into the pan and cook it together with the shallots for a short while to get the flavor, then add in the salt, lemongrass, bay leaves, water, and  coconut milk. Mix it all together until well combine. Lower the heat then cook it till the coconut milk and water is almost dried out.
Take out the rice from the pan and wrap it using a tea towel. Get your steamer pan, put in the steamer ring on and pour in some water , bring it to simmer. Put the wrapped rice on the steamer ring and close the pan. Steam it until the rice is fully cooked. Set aside.
Cook the anchovies. Wash the anchovies, dry it with paper towel. Stir fry the shallot with vegetable oil over a cooking pan till fragrant. Add in the anchovies, green onion and the chillies, mix well. Cook until the anchovies are a bit crispy. Set aside.
Assembling the rice. Get your banana leaves, give it a good wash, then dry it using paper towel. Cut the leaves to smaller rectangle shape. You are going to wrap one serving of the rice in it so don’t cut it too small. Turn on your stove to low heat and take the banana leave and give it a slight burn on both of the side (dont burn it too much). We only want to make the leaves to be more flexible so we can fold it easily. Once done, scoop your rice and put it on top of banana leave, top with a tablespoon of the anchovies and wrap it nicely. You can close the banana leave using tooth picks on both end.
Grill the wrapped rice over low heat until you get a bit of charred marks on the banana leaves. Serve it while hot with some fried shallot garnish.

Gado-Gado

Gado-Gado is a popular Indonesian salad found at many gerobuks, food courts, and restaurants here in Jakarta.  It consists of boiled vegetables such as cabbage, spinach, carrots, and green beans and is covered in copious amounts of peanut sauce, then topped with fried shallots, fried tofu, fried shrimp crackers, and a hard boiled egg.  The sauce is delicious but in small quantities - typically Jeff and I prefer to pick out the veggies that escape the flood.  Of course I had to try it at home and put a little healthier twist on it.
Ingredients:

  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 2 cups spinach leaves
  • 1 cup grated carrot
  • 1 cup green beans cut into 1" lengths
  • 1/4 head cabbage thinly sliced
  • 1-2 hard boiled eggs sliced (if desired)
  • Sauteed tofu (if desired)
Peanut Sauce Ingredients:
  • 1 cup roasted peanuts
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 finger length chilies (mild), deseeded and sliced
  • 1 bird's-eye chili (spicy), deseeded and sliced
  • 1" fresh kencur root, peeled and sliced (substitute ginger since this may be hard to find)
  • 1 kaffir lime leaf
  • 3 T kecap manis (sweet soy sauce - substitute regular soy sauce and a bit of brown sugar)
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 t fresh lime juice
Directions:
  1. Make the peanut sauce by coarsely grinding the peanuts, garlic, chilies, and kencur in a food processor.  Add a little water if needed to keep the mixture turning.
  2. Add the peanut mixture, lime leaf, kecap manis, salt, and water to a saucepan and simmer on low for about 1 hour stirring every 5 minutes or so.  Remove from heat and stir in lime juice.
  3. Blanch the vegetables in salted, boiling water for the following times: green beans - 5 mins, cabbage - 3 mins, carrots and bean sprouts - 2 mins, and spinach - 1 min.  Add them to the pot in order listed so they are finished at the same time.  Remove from heat and drain well.
  4. Arrange the salad on a serving dish and top with a few spoonfuls of the Gado-Gado sauce.  Add eggs and/or tofu.  Serve the remaining sauce on the side for those that want extra.  Selamat makan (bon appetit)!
